Quick answer

How do you calculate a discount?

Discount Amount = Original Price × (Discount % ÷ 100). Sale Price = Original Price − Discount Amount.

Formula

The math behind the number

No black box — here's exactly how the result is computed.

Sale Price  =  Original Price × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100)
Savings     =  Original Price × Discount% ÷ 100

A discount percentage tells you what fraction of the original price is being removed. Subtract that fraction to get the final price.
